CHARACTER COUNTS! WITH SENIORS

On an overcast Saturday morning in May, 50 young people showed up at Madison School in Lombard carrying rakes, brooms and other supplies ready to do yard work for seniors unable to do the work themselves.  The students came from Lombard School District 44 and Glenbard East High School. They were participants in the Lombard CHARACTER COUNTS! Chore Day.

The Lombard CHARACTER COUNTS! Coalition decided to participate in the DuPage Senior Citizens Council's Chore Day as a way for the students to help out senior citizens within the Lombard and Villa Park communities. This project provided a way for students to demonstrate character in action. With the help of these volunteers and others the Council was able to assist 123 seniors rake leaves, pull weeds, clean flower beds and trim bushes.

Some of the comments made by the seniors were:

"I am 79 years old. I've been living in my house for 39 years and I don't want to move. I depend on Chore Days so I can stay in my home longer.  Thank you!"

"Parents should be proud of these students of Glenbard East.  All the help is very appreciated."

Some of the comments from the volunteers were:

"All the seniors were so sweet and appreciative."

"Our senior was so grateful and gave us cake and ice cream."
