CHARACTER COUNTS! is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, nonsectarian character education framework that teaches the Six Pillars of Character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. The CHARACTER COUNTS! Coalition includes thousands of schools, communities and nonprofit organizations.

What Is the CHARACTER COUNTS! Coalition?

A diverse, nonpartisan alliance of leading human-service and educational organizations working together to strengthen the character of young people today — and safeguard tomorrow for all. With hundreds of members around the U.S. (click here for the complete list), the Coalition has the potential of reaching millions of young people and their families, advocating core ethical values that transcend political, religious, class and ethnic divisions. These values, called the “Six Pillars of Character,” are trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.

What Are Its Core Beliefs?

  1. There are enduring, universal moral truths – principles of thought and conduct – which distinguish right from wrong and define the essence of good character.
  2. Character really counts! In personal relationships, in school, at the workplace – in life – who you are makes a difference.
  3. Character is not hereditary, nor does it develop automatically; it must be consciously developed by example and demand.

The Six Pillars of Character

"We must remember that education is not enough. Intelligence plus character - that is the true goal of education." - Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.
